Next step will be the International Moth class world championships at the start of March in Dubai, UAE, where the Victorian sailor hopes to make it a trifecta.

Racing at Audi Victoria Week, McDougall won both of today’s races conducted by Royal Geelong Yacht Club on Corio Bay for the single-hander foiling class in shifty south-easterly wind.

He finished with 11 points for the eight-races series, three points clear of fellow Victorian Lochlin Byrne sailing Mach2 Boats.

McDougall is aged 54 while Byrne is 18. Both were racing Mach 2 Moths designed by McDougall and produced by McConaghy Boats in China. McDougall said the company has now sold 85 of the high-flying foiling craft around the world, including 14 into Australia.

Third overall was Michael Boode of the home club, followed by David Barnes of Latrobe Valley Yacht Club (Vic), sailing Bladerider VRX.

The two Victorian sailors were best of the nine-boat fleet in today’s puffy, light to moderate breeze on Corio Bay. The super-fast foiling craft raced close to the marina of regatta host Royal Geelong Yacht Club, and there were big wind shifts and tricky light patches across their course.

McDougall, a class veteran and leading hull and rig designer who recently won the Australian Moth championship on the Swan River in Perth, WA, looked equally at home in today’s lighter conditions, taking a third place followed by two wins.

His younger rival Lochlin Byrne from Sandringham Yacht Club had a 5-2-2 scorecard to close the day on equal points with McDougall, who is from Black Rock Yacht Club.

Third overall after six races is David Barnes of Latrobe Valley Yacht Club (Vic), sailing Bladerider VRX, followed by local RGYC sailor Michael Boode in the Bladerider Hydrophobic.

The series continues tomorrow with up to four races scheduled on Corio Bay from 1pm.
